2021-22 Welcome

In consultation with the UNC System, the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services, and our trusted healthcare partners at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) and given the low number of cases on campus and our shared commitment to our UNC Asheville Community Expectations, UNC Asheville resumed typical operations in fall 2021 with many of our current COVID-19 safety precautions in place.

At this time, our current COVID-19 guidelines and protocols will remain in place for the foreseeable future into spring 2022 and summer. We will reassess our COVID-19 protocols regularly and provide updates as needed in line with CDC and NCDHHS guidelines, as well guidance from the UNC System.

We hope you have found time during this holiday season to rest and rejuvenate in ways that support your well being before the start of the Spring 2022 semester.

We have been monitoring very closely the prevalence and virulence of the COVID-19 Omicron variant in our region and across the country. In consultation with UNC System leadership and Chancellors, and in light of recommendations from our healthcare partners at MAHEC and Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services, UNC Asheville will:

  • Begin the 2022 spring semester as scheduled on January 10
  • Engage in remote instruction for the first week of the semester: January 10–14. We will begin in-person instruction on January 18.
  • Welcome all students to residence halls and to campus beginning January 6 for new students and January 8 for returning students who would like to return during this short period of remote instruction. Dining, Highsmith Union, and our student life program will be operational and welcoming students back to campus.

This temporary shift to remote instruction for the first week of the Spring semester is part of our COVID-19 Omicron mitigation protocols which will allow us to welcome students, faculty and staff back to campus gradually in a safe, responsible manner.

EmBark Orientation

We’re thrilled to welcome incoming first-year, transfer students, and families to UNC Asheville, and it all starts with EmBark Orientation! This year’s orientation will take place in person on Friday, January 7, 2022.  Find the schedule and registration information here.

Move-In Days

Incoming students are able to check in and move in to their residence hall either Thursday, January 6 between 2pm-5pm or Friday, January 7, between 8am-10am.  Check in will take place at the Housing Office in Governors Hall.  Two guests are still permitted to assist with move-in and the guests must wear face coverings at all times while inside the residence hall.

The residence halls open for continuing students on Saturday, January 8 with the new testing guidance in place.

Testing requirement:  Every residential student regardless of vaccination status is required to submit proof of a negative COVID19 test that was taken no more than 72 hours prior to arriving on campus. Your OneCard will not be activated until this documentation is provided.  Access to residence halls and meal plan activation will happen automatically once proof of a negative test is provided.  More information will be provided soon about how to submit negative test results.

Types of test results accepted: Any COVID19 test results are acceptable.  These include PCR tests, rapid tests, at home or self tests, etc.

Remote instruction: While the residence halls will still open at planned times as mentioned above you are not required to return to campus before classes begin and because instruction will be remote you may choose to stay home and then come to campus at any time of your choosing once you have a negative test result.  We anticipate finding testing sites and getting test results may be challenging to do so this allows more time and flexibility for you to get the required negative test result and then arrive on campus.

Dining on campus: Dining on campus will resume normal activities on Saturday, January 8.  For specific hours and venues visit https://dineoncampus.com/unca/hours-of-operation
